It's been an AMAZING 2 years for Karly's Kloset!! To celebrate and say thank you to all of Karly's Kloset's FABULOUS fans I've put together this little giveaway. A big huge THANK YOU to all of the wonderful vendors who have donated their products and another huge thank you to all of the fans who have made this all possible. I am truly blessed to be able to call this my job and appreciate each and every one of you who have helped make it all possible and support Karly's Kloset :)

RULES:
You may enter up to 3 times but must complete each of the steps below for each entry to count. All you need to do is complete each step and leave a comment saying "step 1 complete" and so on for each of your 3 entries! Super easy :)

1) Visit each vendors facebook page and let them know that Karly's Kloset sent you. You will need to "like" each page before you can post on their wall. So I haven't posted on this blog in foreeeeeeeeever! I do pretty much all of my updates, new products, giveaways, etc. on the Facebook Fan Page.

I'm going to try to start posting on the blog at least once a week, more if I can remember. I'm going to use it for all the latest news with Karly's Kloset as well as more of a personal thing too. Posting about my family and my crazy/happy life!

With the holidays and all the excitement and family get together's I've been quite busy. Now that everything is over and I have gained my holiday weight which will take me until next fall to lose I can get back on track with Karly's Kloset.

2009 was a great year for Karly's Kloset (all 3 months of it!). 2010 is going to bring many new and exciting products to the shop. I've been working very hard on new designs for my crochet hats as well as a whole bunch of new stuff geared towards photographers for props. I am so excited to see how it all turns out! My goal is to have all of my new products listed by the end of January. I think it can be done!

Thanks to everyone for helping Karly's Kloset get off to a great start and a special thanks to all of the photographers whose fabulous pictures can be found in the shop and in the facebook album. I have such wonderful customers!!

A Yummy Little Secret.

Anyone who knows me knows just how much I love me a caramel macchiato.....but......the nearest Starbucks is 20 miles from my house. Yup, that's right, 20 miles. Terrible, isn't it? It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't work from home and actually left my house more than once a week, 20 miles one way is a long way to drive everyday just for a cup of coffee!

Last year I bought myself an inexpensive expresso machine for about $50. Here's the best part, Starbucks sells ALL the ingredients needed to make your favorite yummy coffee drink. For about $28 I can buy the expresso, caramel sauce and vanilla syrup right from any Starbucks and make my own caramel macchiato at home EVERY DAY!!!! I have to replenish my supplies about every 6 weeks.

Yummy!!

How to protect your ideas in the digital age .

If we're in the idea business, how to protect those ideas?

One way is to misuse trademark law. With the help of search engines, greedy lawyers who charge by the letter are busy sending claim letters to anyone who even comes close to using a word or phrase they believe their client 'owns'. News flash: trademark law is designed to make it clear who makes a good or a service. It's a mark we put on something we create to indicate the source of the thing, not the inventor of a word or even a symbol. They didn't invent trademark law to prevent me from putting a picture of your cricket team's logo on my blog. They invented it to make it clear who was selling you something (a mark for trade = trademark).
I'm now officially trademarking thank-you™. From now on, whenever you use this word, please be sure to send me a royalty check.

Another way to protect your ideas is to (mis)use copyright law. You might think that this is a federal law designed to allow you to sue people who steal your ideas. It's not. Ideas are free. Anyone can use them. Copyright protects the expression of ideas, the particular arrangement of words or sounds or images. Bob Marley's estate can't sue anyone who records a reggae song... only the people who use his precise expression of words or music. Sure, get very good at expressing yourself (like Dylan or Sarah Jones) and then no one can copy your expression. But your ideas? They're up for grabs, and its a good thing too.

The challenge for people who create content isn't to spend all the time looking for pirates. It's to build a platform for commerce, a way and a place to get paid for what they create. Without that, you've got no revenue stream and pirates are irrelevant anyway. Newspapers aren't in trouble because people are copying the news. They're in trouble because they forgot to build a scalable, profitable online model for commerce.

Patents are an option except they're really expensive and do nothing but give you the right to sue. And they're best when used to protect a particular physical manifestation of an idea. It's a real crapshoot to spend tens of thousands of dollars to patent an idea you thought up in the shower one day.

So, how to protect your ideas in a world where ideas spread?

Don't.

Instead, spread them. Build a reputation as someone who creates great ideas, sometimes on demand. Or as someone who can manipulate or build on your ideas better than a copycat can. Or use your ideas to earn a permission asset so you can build a relationship with people who are interested. Focus on being the best tailor with the sharpest scissors, not the litigant who sues any tailor who deigns to use a pair of scissors.

What I've been up to......

I've been totally MIA the last few days. The construction is almost complete on the new office. Carpet goes in next Monday and then we just need to install all of my workspace and shelves and it's move in time!! I CAN'T WAIT. I am so going to put a lock on the door and no one is allowed in when I am working, I've been working out of my dining room for too long and can't wait for my own space. I got booted out of my first office when Karly was born, she kinda-sorta needed a bedroom!

I'm sure you've seen the totally awesome new logo that Shawna from Wee Winks Photography designed for me. I've been so busy designing all of my new packaging and marketing materials now that Karly's Kloset has a fabulous logo! It all went to print earlier this week and should be delivered by Christmas.

If you saw the new business cards on facebook then you have probably already figured out what one of the new product lines is......BABY LEGS!!!! Yes, I have been sewing like a mad woman trying to build up a HUGE inventory so when I list them they will all be in-stock and ready to ship. The new line should be going up around the 1st of January.

When I opened Karly's Kloset in September I did not expect my sales and following to turn out like it has. I am very thankful for all of my wonderful customers and followers who continue to support Karly's Kloset, without all of you none of this would even be possible.

If you're anything like me then you always have one burning on the stove! I just ordered the BEST candle from a Etsy shop and fellow Etsy WestMI Team member. It's a soy candle, which burns cleaner than a paraffin wax and does not leave all that nasty black soot around your house.

I bought the 10 oz Pumpkin Spice Jar which you can find at Suzzane's Etsy Shop Bliss Soybean Candles & Gifts. This scent is so yummy!!

It's All Yellow

Here's the color of the new office. I hated it at first and spent all day yesterday debating on whether or not to put the 2nd coat on. I finally decided to keep it, the spiral energy efficient light bulbs were throwing the color off so my husband changed them to regular 60 watts and now the color looks like it's supposed to. Now I just have to pick out carpet and get my workspace installed....could be moving in as early as next week!!! We'll finally be able to eat in our dining room again!!

The staircase is getting drywalled tonight and is going to be painted a cornflower blue.
